Jan-Ake Gustafsson Awarded Honorary Doctorate in Finland

On Friday, May 27, University of Houston Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling (UH CNRCS) founder Jan-Åke Gustafsson was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Turku in Finland.

The degree was one of 19 honorary doctorates awarded during the three-day ceremony, held May 26-28. Highlights of the ceremony included traditional Finnish sword-sharpening and a banquet at the historic Turku Castle. Gustafsson also was invited to present the lecture, “Steroid Receptors and Cancer,” in which he detailed the impact of his research on cancer treatment and prevention.

The University of Turku is one of Finland’s leading research universities and a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of prestigious universities in Europe. The university was established in 1920 and hosts an enrollment of more than 20,000 students.
